Borthwick School Conversion

City Architecture Office was appointed to undertake a survey, feasibility study and scheme design to realise the potential of a redundant B-listed 19thC school building in Borthwick, Midlothian.

The proposals change the use and sub-divide the former school building to form two semi-detached properties over two floors within the existing envelope. Each property has the benefit of its own main door entrance with level access and direct access onto its own private garden space to the NE, SE & SW. The existing vehicular access is retained and the alterations are sensitively designed to respect the original form, materials and naturally fit the original rhythm of the building and its fenestration.

The size and height of the existing internal spaces suited subdivision and the introduction of a first floor level.

Each property has 5 spacious bedrooms , a large double-height living space and direct access to a south facing terrace.
