Scottish Pavilion: Kolkata Book Fair

Project Value: £30k
Client: British Council
Competition
2008

The form of the pavilion is strongly evocative of a Scottish highland landscape. The fabric roof is printed with a striking Paisley Pattern – a direct reference to the longstanding cultural connections between Scotland and India. In darkness, the tent roof remains an attractive beacon- glowing like a paisley print lampshade.

It is an exemplar of environmentally conscious design. The form & profile promote natural cross-ventilation and the passive dissipation of heat. Materials are all locally available and the fabric roof provides protection against the elements whilst permitting high levels of natural light within the interior.

The pavilion can be easily redeployed at the end of the Book Fair, to function as a relief shelter or social gathering place elsewhere in India.
